Zero production bugs for a global music platform

Application type: WebDigital Music Distribution

Brief

TuneCore, a global digital music distribution and licensing platform serving 80,000+ independent artists across 15 countries, partnered with Sedin to strengthen the stability and reliability of their software platform.

Sedin evaluated and overhauled TuneCore's end-to-end testing processes, introducing a TypeScript-based Playwright automation framework, embedding QA into agile sprint cycles, and leading testing through a major legacy system migration.

The result: 500+ test cases automated across three environments, 80% E2E UI and 90% API automation coverage, and zero production bugs reported by clients - all while saving approximately $1,000 per month in regression testing costs.

Client background

TuneCore is a leading digital music distribution, publishing, and licensing service company. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, TuneCore operates across 15 countries and serves a global community of independent artists and creators.

Tunecore has built a truly global footprint in the independent music industry. The company serves a thriving community of 80,000+ artists enrolled in its Accelerator program worldwide, empowering independent musicians to distribute, publish, and license their music without the need for a traditional record label.

Internally, TuneCore operates with a lean but highly collaborative structure - 150 employees organized across 6 Scrum Teams following the Spotify Model. This agile-first setup drives rapid product iteration and continuous delivery, but also places significant demand on the quality and reliability of their software platform.

As TuneCore's user base and product complexity grew, so did the need for a scalable, structured approach to quality assurance that could keep pace with their development velocity.

The challenge

TuneCore needed to strengthen the stability and reliability of their platform for end-users but lacked the time to focus on it internally. They sought a QA partner to evaluate their current testing process and execution across functional testing, test automation, and performance testing on multiple internal projects.

Specifically, TuneCore was facing the following pain points:

  • Insufficient testing stability and reliability across a growing, multi-region platform.

  • No structured QA partner to evaluate or improve existing testing processes and execution.

  • Need for comprehensive automation across functional, regression, and performance testing on different internal projects.

  • A legacy system migration underway, requiring rigorous data validation and testing coverage.

  • QA processes not yet embedded into agile sprint cycles, causing gaps in delivery quality.

Our approach

Sedin's QA experts partnered with TuneCore to comprehensively overhaul and optimize their software testing processes across multiple internal projects. Our approach was collaborative, agile, and deeply integrated into TuneCore's existing workflows.

Agile process integration

We applied agile methodologies and integrated into the client's Jira and Confluence processes. This enhanced collaborative efforts and aligned QA activities with sprint planning and delivery cycles, ensuring every story was tested with appropriate coverage before release.

Legacy system migration testing

We led testing efforts for TuneCore's migration from their legacy system to the new platform. This included:

  • Data validation during database migration to ensure integrity and continuity.
  • Automated testing script generation for migrated workflows.
  • New feature testing, test scenario creation, and end-to-end test case development.

Web application testing - artists dashboard & payments

We took an active role in testing TuneCore's web application covering the Artists Dashboard, store distribution, Finance, and Payments modules. Our team participated in each sprint activity and sprint planning, expanding manual testing coverage to improve story delivery quality.

End-to-end automation framework

We developed a robust end-to-end automation framework using a TypeScript-based Playwright setup. Key achievements:

  • Automated scripts integrated into the release process via the Jenkins CI pipeline.
  • Streamlined functionality validation and optimized overall application performance.
  • Covered API testing and performance testing as part of the automation suite.
  • Achieved 80% E2E UI Automation and 90% API Automation coverage.

Team culture & knowledge transfer

We built a strong team culture that emphasized communication, teamwork, and synergy. We ensured all stakeholders were aligned on purpose, objectives, and expectations, and worked closely with TuneCore's team to enable them to conduct testing independently with our guidance.
